Laminate flooring is built to keep up with a busy family! A quality laminate floor can withstand high traffic, high heels, pet nails, and dropped dishes. Its strength comes from it’s construction. Laminate is a composite material with an image of wood or stone adhered to the top. A surface finish layer is applied so that laminate resists scratching and denting better than real wood or stone. The wear layer ranges from 7mm-12mm in thickness. Advanced embossing techniques give a more realistic appearance of hardwood or stone floors with textured surfaces. They can be installed below, on or above grade, but are sensitive to moisture, similar to hardwood floors.
Laminate floors are typically constructed in 4 layers:
- Wear layer – contains aluminum oxide in the finish to protect the floor from stains, fading, and wear
- Image design layer – highly detailed photographic image of wood or stone
- Inner core layer – provides structural strength and stability
- Backing layer – creates a moisture barrier that protects the floor from warping
Laminates are often less expensive and easier to install, due to their patented locking system, than hardwoods, making them an economical option for your home.
Technology in the laminate flooring category has resulted in various styles offering a moisture resistant core and moisture warranty. We invite you to our showroom to check out the different laminate styles we offer.
